Good Omens 2 appreciation post for that moment after Nina has just rocked Crowley’s world with the revelation that no, he isn’t slick and yes, it is glaringly obvious to everyone just how head over heels in love with Aziraphale he is.

Crowley takes himself off to the french restaurant and is drowning his sorrows in a bottle of wine while having the realisation that he’s been following the angel around like a lovesick puppy all day with no other possible agenda other than to be around him.

And then he sees Aziraphale and whistles him over but the angel is too busy to join him for a wine in the middle of the day and Crowley tries to divert questions by complaining that he’s scared Gabriel/Jim is gonna smite him and he’ll be well and truly smote, no, smoted? Smited? What’s the word he’s looking for?

And the angel gives him a knowing look and says:

“Smitten, I believe.”

PERFECTION.

GRAMMATICAL CORRECTION AND DIAGNOSIS IN A SENTENCE.

AZIRAPHALE JUST READ HIM LIKE A HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE BOOK AND DOESN’T EVEN REALISE HE HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD.

This is my new favourite double entendre.

Smitten as the past tense of Smite. And the exact reason Crowley is drinking in the middle of the day.

He’s realising he’s smitten, your honour.

I hope Neil closed the laptop with a dramatic flourish after writing that line. Hell if I’d written a moment that perfect I’d take a victory lap of the kitchen and then call someone to tell them how clever I’d been before I pop.

Hello Mr. Gaiman. Recently I have failed to accomplish a life-long goal that cost me a lot of effort and time I won't get back. I don't want to go into details, I just want to know if you have some words of solace or comofrt for this poor soul.

neil-gaiman:

The best comfort I can give is that most of the good things that have happened to me were preceded by awful, terrible things I wouldn’t have wished upon an enemy. And if the bad things hadn’t happened, the good things couldn’t have happened either. I’m not saying “Cheer up, things always work out for the best” or anythng like that. But life, in retrospect, is an odd thing, and looking back I’d even keep most of the bad bits.

Setting up the second coming

Very VERY new Good Omens fan so please be nice to me <3

I think the mention of the first fall of a prince of heaven, bringing up that Crowley was a high-ranking angel, Crowley not introducing himself by his Angel name at the beginning of the Universe, and him being the Angel to speak Light into existence, is a proper set up to the season 3 revelation of him being Lucifer. (This would only work if we assume that Lucifer is a different entity than Satan because we’ve seen him in Season 1. Although Crowley being the snake in the garden and the one to tempt Christ in the desert could mean that his and Satan’s myths have been mixed together at some point ? so idk maybe they ARE different? I mean DC Lucifer was based on Neil Gaiman’s the Sandman Lucifer and he doesn’t look like that)

I want to imagine that Crowley as Lucifer would do things in heaven that Satan would get credit for and Satan had always been a credit-grabbing douche but Crowley does everything anyway because it just gives him more freedom to play with the humans, the stars, and Aziraphale to stay below the radar. Satan’s ego inflates, he challenges heaven, he falls. Crowley questions the necessity of war and the absence of forgiveness but the morale, stability, and authority of heaven had just been damaged because of the war so questions like Crowley’s would have been dangerous. Heaven learns how close he had worked with Satan and uses it to make a high-ranking angel like him an example, so he saunters vaguely downwards. All of this said, I am assuming one too many princes of heaven falling but I’m sure it will work out. I’ve never been good at math anyway but God is also Three persons so neither is heaven with people math hehe.

Aziraphale, is set up as the supreme archangel, but as we know, there are higher orders than his (The Metatron) so if he were to be in charge of Christ’s second coming, he might have to manage Christ closely. The return of Christ could bring up even sourer memories for Crowley as before the incarnation of Christ, he (as Lucifer) was God’s second. (I wouldn’t know how they will handle the triplicity of God’s nature though because if God had always been Father-Son-Holy Spirit, it would mean there had been a son prior to incarnation). Adding onto this pain would be seeing Aziraphale so close to God the Son. I think if there would ever be reconciliation between Crowley and Christ, it would come from their shared experience of humanity and an appeal to Christ’s suffering and unnecessary sacrifice of His human life. I imagine a recall of Christ’s question of how he was abandoned and forsaken, and a lesson on attachment (Christ of letting go and Crowley of how it betters you).

I’m hoping @neil-gaiman sees this. I am obsessed with the new season and my mind is RUNNING.
